Searching for Sun Ra begins with a lost sock in a Wigan laundrette and ends with a spacecraft somewhere considerably further away, passing through mental distress, unemployment, conspiracy theories, black holes, small acts of kindness and the nagging, occasionally magnificent suspicion that there must be something more. George Clinton is somewhere in the machinery, George Formby and Frank Randle are knocking about too, and none of this is quite as random as it sounds, although some of it definitely is.
